Patients who have experienced transient loss of consciousness are commonly evaluated in the emergency department in addition to various other medical settings. It is important to determine the cause of loss of consciousness, as this has bearing on further work-up and treatment, but it is often difficult to differentiate common etiologies—namely, seizure and syncope—from one another. This course provides the trainee or medical student with a systematic approach to the patient presenting with transient loss of consciousness. We will discuss how to determine if a patient may have experienced a seizure versus syncope, and will provide general guidelines for next steps in evaluation and management.
